The goal of an employee is to gain the attention that will increase their chances of advancement and further responsibility. In order to do this you must get the positive attention of your manager. Showing up to work on time, being a part of the team and performing your job to the best of your abilities are three main ways to get their attention. There are other ways though that will help you to stand out from the rest of your co-workers and to get the positive attention you need to reach your goals.
Offer Your Time to Projects
Every office has projects that require more time than normal. Often managers are left to pick up the slack on these projects to finish them by the office deadline. If you are aware of a project that may need your assistance and you have the time for the project then offer to help. Let your manager know that you are willing to do more than just show up to work and finish your job. Let them know you are willing to help outside of your daily tasks.
Show You can Do More
Each of us has abilities, education, training and experience that are not used during our daily tasks. You may have experience in technical support, software implementation or with presentation development. If you see an office member or your manager struggling with a problem that you have the experience to help fix then offer your experience. You may very well be able to save your company time and money with the experience and knowledge you can offer.
Complete your Work Efficiently
There are some employees who are given a specific set of tasks that they complete each day. These tasks may not take that long to complete but the employee may choose to stretch the job out so they are not asked to do other tasks. If you want to get your manager's positive attention then complete your tasks efficiently. Show that you can consistently complete your work and that you consistently have extra time to take on more tasks. The more reliable you are with completing your work ahead of schedule the greater the chance you will receive positive attention and more responsibilities.
Learn What Management Does
Each company is different and each management team is different. A manager at one company is in charge of their daily tasks, scheduling and project management. A manager at another company may only be in charge of their tasks while being the go between for employees and executives. In order to gain the positive attention of your manager it is vital to know what that manager does. If you know what the manager does and is responsible for then you will have a better idea of what would gain their positive attention. Managers appreciate help that actually benefits what they do while benefiting the company or the office.
